The Issue of Spanking

The issue of spanking is one that doesn’t have a clear answer. In other words there is no such thing as an “authority” on the issue. Many of us have ideas, some bad, and some good. The case with Adrian Peterson, his heart was in the right place. I can’t make excuses for him. I can only look at him from what has been reported. First, without sounding existential, maybe he didn’t know his own strength. Secondly, his heart was in the right place, we don’t know his son, his habits, and his behavior. He was doing what the male figure does and that is disciplining the child. Also, a lot has been said about southern upbringing as if it’s somehow barbaric.
Many have related spankings to the bible and some have related it to slavery. Both would be correct in my estimation. Let’s reverse it and deal with slavery. During this time in our sorted history, beatings were used to get the person back in line. With that reasoning the beatings could be severe ending in death. So in our current state we use the same reasoning to spank, to bring into obedience. I know some will take offence to this, since whites spank their children as well. The difference is this happened to our ancestors who were adults, not children. The other side of the issue is biblical. Let me say this first, the bible is not a moral book. The most famous scripture used is (prov 10:24 He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him. Rod meant many things, but for the sake of boredom, we will look at it as “Authoritative” or showing authority. Secondly chastisement was symbolized by the rod (Ps 89:32, 125:3; Prov 10:24) The word chastisement means severe criticism; a rebuke or strong reprimand, or corporal punishment; a beating. Their many other scriptures that speaks of child rearing, but Proverbs should not be the standard. The bible was used in the subjugation of blacks. Case in point, Eph 6:5, “Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ.” Further, Ex 21:20-21 states that, “When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property.” To further this link between slavery, spanking and the bible, do we know where the book of Proverbs comes from or better yet stolen from. Many scholars agree that Proverbs was probably ancient Egyptian wisdom writings. This book of wisdom comes from the minds and imaginations of black people. Proverbs is basically a father speaking to a child. Ancient wisdom differed.
In today’s society spanking is frowned upon, yet, I believe we are to raise our children as we see fit. I don’t believe in the latest studies that show spanking somehow causes depression, anxiety, and alcoholism, or creates violence. As a parent I spanked my children. It depended on the offence. I can count on one hand the amount of times I spanked them. Afterwards I would sit them and tell them why I did what I did. Other times I would use a time out. Believe me when I say, it is affective. Parenting doesn’t come with a complementary book of do’s and don’ts. Hell, I’ve never been a parent and our children have never been children before. We are both learning from each other and figuring it out as we go along. Much more could be said about this topic but why meander any further.
